PERNEM: Waste water, suspected to contain sewage, is being released into the sea at Ashvem beach in Mandrem, allegedly by some hotels operating in the area. Locals said that the hotels release the water into the sea and further cover the dirty black channels of water with dry sand to prevent their offence be-ing exposed.

According to locals in the area, this illegal discharge has been happening for the past several days, and has led the beach area to stink.
Locals claimed that Ashvem beach is one of the cleanest and most beautiful beaches that they are blessed with, where hundreds of domestic and foreign tourists, as well as locals, visit on a daily basis. The villagers have requested the sanitary officer from the local health center, the local panchayat and the Tourism Department to investigate the matter on priority.
Local resident Prasad Shahapukar, an advocate, said, “Ashvem beach is one of the cleanest beaches in the state. It has rocks where people sit for hours and spend their evenings watching the sunset. However, some hotels operating in the area have started releasing waste water into the sea and to hide it, they cover the area with dry sand.”
“We request the sanitary officer, panchayat and the Tourism Department to visit the site and find out from where and how this waste water is reaching the beach, and take strict action against the culprits,” Shahapurkar said.
