MARGAO: A fine brace by striker Milton Gomes helped Navelim Villagers Union to register a 2-1 win over United Club, Nerul and enter the semi-finals of Our Lady of Merces inter-village football tournament organized by Sirlim Sports Club at church ground, Chinchinim, Thursday. Navelim led 2-0 at half time.
Navelim got off to a flying start and rocked the rival citadel in the 12th minute when striker Milton headed home off a well measured chip from Rosevelt Gomes.
Former Dempo attacking midfielder, Orlando Gomes played a stellar role for his team and kept his forwards busy with a stream of fluent passes. Viegas dazzled the crowds with his one-touch play and neat enterprising display. He was unlucky as his rasping volley kissed the crossbar and went out. Milton doubled the lead in the 18th minute when he beat the rival goalkeeper with a clinical finish off a Alvito Colaco cross.
Nerul tried their best to neutralize the lead but could not break the rival strong defence.
Nerul were expected to come back strongly after the change over but the Navelim defence was vigilant and denied them any opportunities.
However, Nerul managed to pull on back through Suraj Khauntankar who dribbled past a couple of defenders and punted the ball to the far corner of the net late in the second half.
