MARGAO: In a latest development, the South Goa District Collector, who is also the chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, in an order, has directed the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) to demolish a specific unsafe building situated in the heart of the state’s commercial capital.
Recently, the civic body had issued a trade licence to a trader for commercial activity, despite having knowledge that the said building is unsafe.
Sources informed that this building is one of the few unsafe buildings identified by the civic body in the past. Shockingly, commercial activities are going on in the said building in full swing.
In an order, South Goa Collector A Asvin Chandru has directed the demolition of the said building to prevent any untoward incidents.
As per the order, an application has been received by the Collector informing that there is illegal renovation and commercial activity going on at an unsafe building in the property ‘Cabeca de Calcondem’ situated on Isidoro Baptista Road in Margao.
There is also mention about the civic body issuing notice to all the interested parties for submitting a health assessment certificate of the building to check the stability from a government registered agency that is Goa Engineering College, Farmagudi.
The Goa College of Engineering in its report stated that the said building is unsafe for occupancy.
