Mormugao Council offers OTS to settle tax disputes

VASCO: In a bid to mop up its resources, the Mormugao Municipal Council hinted at providing one-time settlement (OTS) for unpaid lease rent of municipal properties.

The municipality was struggling to recover the rent pending due to non-payment by the tenants.

A joint meeting of Vasco MLA Krishna ‘Daji’ Salkar, Mormugao Chairperson Girish Borker and tenants was held on Tuesday wherein it was decided to give fair rates and to settle the pending disputes. The city fathers opined that giving OTS scheme would a hope for financial stability and better upkeep of assets of the council.

Currently the municipality had applied the government rate of Rs 12 per square metre for shops and offices occupied by lessees of the municipal buildings. Later, the municipality decided to hike it to Rs 25 per square and apply it to all the shops. But the lessees did not agree to the revises rates proposed rates and refused to pay the rent.
