PANJIM: After a subdued start on Friday, celebrations at the ‘Samba Square’ got going on Carnival day with revellers dancing to vivacious music and thronging stalls at the venue, as invigorated revelry was unbolted by King Momo in Panjim.
Speaking to Herald, CCP Commissioner and Chairman of the Panjim Carnival Committee Sanjit Rodrigues said he was happy with the response. “It has turned out just as we had planned it ~ clean, family entertainment. We are very happy with the response,” Rodrigues asserted.
The Samba Square will feature dance, music and entertainment for the remaining days including special games and kids’ zones, lounge entertainment and other facilities in the garden.
The four-day event will feature live bands and grand Carnival revelry in typical party atmosphere.
The Samba Square and related festivities are part of the CCP’s initiatives to ring in people’s carnival after there were complaints that the celebrations were losing their old-world charm due to commercialisation and organisation by professional companies, leaving no scope for spontaneous participation of people. Crowds thronged the Garcia da Orta garden sporting fancy masks, wigs and costumes and spontaneously broke into dance gyrating to the rhythms dished out by bands at the venue.
