PANJIM: More Supreme Court judgments will be translated into Konkani, Marathi and other Indian languages, informed Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud on Saturday.
Chandrachud said, “Another crucial step for democratising access to justice is ensuring that our judgments and orders are available in all regional languages. I am glad to inform you that judgments of the Supreme Court are also being translated into Konkani. That process has to be expedited and I am sure that the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court will ensure that the judgments of Bombay High Court are also translated into a language which the people of State can understand. We must ensure that the work we do as judges and lawyers becomes comprehensible to our citizens.”

According to the CJI, over 37,000 Supreme Court judgments since Independence have already been translated into Hindi. They are now being translated into other Indian languages, he informed.
Reacting to this, Global Konknni Forum president Kennedy Afonso said, “It is a good initiative by the Chief Justice of India. Its purpose is that the people can easily read the judgments and understand them. But if judgments are translated in Konkani Devanagari then certain segments in Goa will not be able to read them. So it will be best if judgments are translated in both – Devanagari and Romi script. Or else the purpose will be defeated.”
