PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar promised to begin restoration work on the Chapora and Alorna forts before the commencement of the monsoons, promising that the government would think of taking up two forts each year for restoration.
Replying to the discussion on demands for grants for Archives and Archaeology Department, Parrikar admitted that many of the forts are in a dilapidated condition and that he would try to arrange money for their restoration.
The Opposition had moved a cut motion to the demand for grants alleging failure on the part of the government to restore several monuments and forts, which are in a dilapidated condition.
San Andre MLA Vishnu Wagh raised the issue of the government not studying the old Kadamba capital, the remains atop which have great historical significance. He explained how these remains are today falling prey to laterite stone thieves and that there was nothing being done to either study, excavate or preserve these structures.
His comments were in tune with the cut motion moved by the Opposition benches which said that the government failed to prepare a survey of archaeological remains of the state.
Chief Minister in his reply made no mention of the concerns raised by BJP MLA Wagh.
He however promised to separate the Department of Archives and Archaeology as well as improve the staffing and other requirements of the department. “The department itself is also become like an archive. Let us make that department more active, if it becomes hyperactive then also it can become a problem,” Parrikar said.
