CUNCOLIM: Four Cuncolim policemen, who were on patrol duty early Tuesday, found themselves at the receiving end after they were attacked by seven youth for objecting to drinking alcohol at a public place.
According to sources, the incident took place at 4 am at Maddicotto, Cuncolim near the old police station wherein seven youth were drinking at a public place when the police on highway patrol duty objected their action and asked them to leave.
Irked over the police intervention, the youth abused two cops and later damaged the police vehicles.
Two policemen were attacked by the group and when two other cops intervened they too were assaulted.
The policemen injured in the attack are Sanjay Gaonkar, Akash Gaonkar, Pramod Kotharkar and Mahesh Naik.
According to sources, all four were referred to the Government Hospital and were later discharged.
Three police vehicles were damaged in the incident.
Later, the police with help of locals arrested two locals – Mayur Dessai and Shaikh Abdul Razak. However, five others namely Sandeep Dessai, Santosh Naik, Subham Borkar, Saiesh Dessai and Sapnesh Dessai, all from Cuncolim, are absconding.
Meanwhile, Cuncolim Police with additional police force from Fatorda, Margao, have launched a hunt to nab the five absconding youth involved in the attack.
Police searched areas of Naingillo, Mollangini, Sidhnagar and other places till late night but failed to nab the culprits.
Police, however, said they are confident of nabbing the absconders.
Meanwhile, South SP Arvind Gawas informed Herald that the police will not tolerate any kind of attack on policemen and vowed to take strict action against those involved in the attack.
Gawas also warned those people found drinking in public places and along the roadside.
He said, “We will not allow drinking in public places.”
Police informed media persons that all the seven youth were under the influence of alcohol. A case has been booked against them for manhandling government servants on duty, for damaging public property and for creating nuisance.
