PANJIM: Celebrated filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, who has taken charge as the director of the 55th International Film Festival of Goa (IFFI), said in an exclusive interaction with O Heraldo, that he wanted IFFI to become the Goa Film Festival on the lines of some of the world’s biggest film fests, like those at Cannes, Venice and Berlin.
“What I want to do next may lead to some arguments. Only in our country, do we have the International Film Festival of India. But across the world, you have the Cannes Film Festival, Berlin Film Festival and more based on the cities where they take place. So why not the Goa Film Festival?” Kapur said, speaking to us on the sidelines of IFFI.
Kapur, the maker of acclaimed films like Elizabeth and Bandit Queen, had more thoughts on Goa as a venue, since the state has been continuously hosting IFFI for the last two decades. “This can truly become the Goa Film Festival only when the people of the state own it. Gradually, Goa’s participation should increase and the people of Goa should take on more responsibility because this should be their festival. We will all do it together.”
