Saligao sarpanch Eknath Oraskar agrees that the GTP in his village is need of the hour, but he doesn’t want waste from too many villages coming to Saligao.
“We need the plant but it should be for only two constituencies of Calangute and Saligao and in fact the former CM had assured us of the same,” Oraskar told Herald.
He said that the amount of garbage lying on top of the hill will be a health hazard if it is not taken care of right now.
“We have to insist that the existing garbage will be taken care of first and tackle the day-to-day garbage simultaneously. The agency that has taken the contract has to make sure that the plant is working at its full capacity and more importantly is self sufficient,” the sarpanch said.
Oraskar said he has learnt that the unit will be run for ten years and they will be paid then.
“It is obvious that they will have to run the plant and not let it be white elephant as they are taking a risk. Also, I always insisted, and still insist, that the approach road to the plant should be a dedicated one and not from our village,” he said.
