CURTORIM: Navelim Villagers Union defeated Wilred Leisure Sports Club 9-8 via the sudden death to move into the semi-final of the Wilred Leisure Soccer tournament, organised by Wilred Leisure, Curtorim, at Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs ground, Curtorim, on Thursday.
Navelim started the match on the front foot and the first chance of the game in the 6th minute when Aulon Gomes found Clinton Niasso inside the Wilred Leisure box, but the latter failed to keep his composure infront of the goal and shot wide.
At the other end, Wilred Leisure Josley Gomes wasted a glorious chance to give his team the lead as he shot straight at the keeper Tony Dias from touching distance.
Navelim midfielder Jaison Pereira dribbled past Curtorim defender Neville Fernandes and sent in a diagonal pass to Josly Costa, but the latter’s move was tackled by rival defender Ratesh Nagesh in the 12th minute.
Joaquim Carvalho of Wilred Leisure drew the first blood off a curling corner kick in the 15th minute.
Within three minutes, Joshly Gomes doubled the lead for Wilred with his power-packed grounder off Savio Fernandes connect.
Navelim Villagers coach Aulisio Fernandes strengthened the forward line by introducing Anil Shivolkar midway in the first half and the substitute made an immediate impact as he assisted for the team’s first goal.
Anil Shivolkar dribbled past a couple of Wilred Leisure defenders and passed the ball to his teammate Clinton Niasso inside the rival box and the latter’s shot gave no chance to the rival keeper, 1-2.
Four minutes later, Anil Shivolkar drew level when he collected a stray ball from the midfield and shot from outside the box, which coolly dipped into the Wilred Leisure nets to level terms.
The scores were level at the end of regulation time.
In the resultant tie-breaker, Navelim Villagers Union netted through Micky Colaco, Anil Shivolkar, Jaison Pereira, Mobin Gomes, Suraj Naik, Aulon Gomes and Clinton Niasso.
While for Wilred Leisure SC, Neville Fernandes, Savio Fernandes, Nelson Fernandes, Tony Dias, Anthony Cardozo and Joaquim Carvalho scored on target. Navelim Villagers Union will meet SC Davorlim in the semi-final.
