India hit back at Pakistan’s latest attempt to internationalise the Kashmir issue during a UN Security Council debate on Women, Peace and Security. Responding to Pakistan’s allegations of sexual violence in Kashmir, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, cited the 1971 atrocities in then-East Pakistan, calling them a “systematic campaign of genocidal mass rape of 400,000 women” sanctioned by the Pakistani state.
Calling Pakistan’s remarks a “delusional tirade,” Harish said Islamabad had no moral standing to speak on women’s rights after its army’s history of violence and human rights abuses. India further accused Pakistan of bombing its own citizens and harbouring terrorism, urging the UN to see through its propaganda.
