An Algerian woman expressed remorse for her “horrible” actions Friday as she faced trial in France for the rape and murder of 12-year-old Lola Daviet, a case that has shocked the nation.
Dahbia Benkired, now 27, was arrested after Lola went missing three years ago in northeast Paris. Her body was later discovered in a trunk in the lobby of the building where her parents worked as caretakers.

The case quickly drew political attention, with conservative and far-right figures calling for stricter immigration enforcement, after authorities revealed Benkired had overstayed her student visa and failed to comply with a notice to leave France. However, the victim’s mother urged politicians to refrain from exploiting her daughter’s death for political gain.
During the hearing, Lola’s family attended court wearing T-shirts bearing the message: “You were the sun of our life, you will be the star of our nights.” One woman in her fifties broke down in tears as Benkired entered the dock.
