India strongly criticised “baseless and biased” observations made in a recent United Nations report on the human rights situation in Myanmar during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA). The Indian Parliamentary Delegation, led by Lok Sabha MP Dr D. Purandeswari, attended the opening session and paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi’s bust at the UN Headquarters.
During a combined briefing by special mandate holders on Myanmar, MP Dilip Saikia reaffirmed India’s consistent position supporting a “Myanmar-owned and Myanmar-led” peace process. He stressed that lasting stability in the neighbouring country could only be achieved through inclusive political dialogue and the early resumption of democratic processes via credible and participatory elections.
Highlighting India’s ongoing humanitarian efforts, Saikia cited people-centric initiatives such as Operation Brahma and Operation Sadbhav, launched to deliver timely relief to Myanmar during natural disasters.
Objecting to specific portions of the UN report that mentioned India, Saikia said some findings—particularly those linking the April 2025 Pahalgam terrorist attack to displaced persons from Myanmar—were “completely baseless and biased.” He urged the Special Rapporteur to avoid depending on “unverified or skewed media reports” that attempt to tarnish India’s image on the global stage.
Focus on Global Disarmament
In a separate session on “Disarmament Machinery,” MP Sajda Ahmed reiterated India’s firm commitment to multilateralism and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter. She reaffirmed that the Conference on Disarmament continues to be the sole multilateral forum for negotiating issues related to global disarmament.
Ahmed noted that despite the challenging global security environment, India remains optimistic that meaningful progress can be achieved through dialogue and consensus. “India stands ready to collaborate with all Member States to develop collective and pragmatic solutions,” she said.
Through its statements at the UNGA, India underscored its dual commitment to promoting peace and stability in its neighbourhood and to strengthening international cooperation on disarmament and global security.
