MAPUSA: FC Goa huffed and puffed before they finally registered a hard-fought 1-0 win over Churchill Brothers FC in the Reliance Foundation Development League U-21 match played at Duler Stadium, here, on Thursday.
FC Goa who had won their last match against Sporting Clube de Goa time and again attacked the rival citadel but failed to score. Bryson Pereira, Shawn Fernandes and Konsam Singh saw their efforts being saved by Churchill Brothers’ goalkeeper Abhay Kumar.
On crossing ends, Young Gaurs saw two deadly crosses by Asher Rodrigues and Shawn Fernandes being collected with full stretched diving saves by custodian Abhay.
Churchill Brothers had just one good attempt at the rival goal where a stinging 25-yard strike by medio Utkarsh Topwal was fisted for a corner by Young Gaurs goalkeeper Lionel Rymmei. When it looked the match was heading for a draw, substitute Ruell Goes brilliantly curled his corner into the far corner of the goal beating the entire defence, 1-0.
Earlier, Dempo Sports Club drubbed Sporting Clube de Goa by 4-0 margin. In the first session, Dempo SC saw Swavel Furtado net a brace, while Murphy Fernandes made it, 3-0.
On crossing over, Dempo SC’s hunger for goals did not stop with Ashon Vaz pumping in the fourth goal. At Guirim ground, Sesa FA pipped Clube de Salgaocar by a solitary goal win. The all-important goal for the winners was scored by Cain Fernandes in the very first minute of play.
