Mayem MLA Premendra Shet has called upon the Water Resources Department to urgently undertake desilting of the Bicholim and Valvanti rivers, stating that the water bodies have not been cleaned for several years.
Shet pointed out that the lack of desilting has led to frequent waterlogging and flooding, resulting in extensive crop damage and financial losses for farmers in the surrounding areas. He said timely maintenance of the rivers is crucial to ensure smooth water flow and to safeguard agricultural livelihoods.
Urging the department to act without further delay, the MLA stressed that desilting would not only prevent crop destruction but also help restore the rivers’ capacity, benefiting both farmers and nearby villages.
He appealed to the government to prioritise the issue and provide relief to affected farmers by taking concrete measures to address the long-pending problem.
