Around 30 check dams constructed across Sattari nearly two decades ago to improve irrigation and water availability for farmers are no longer functioning effectively, raising concerns over water security in the region.
Sources said the iron gates installed at these check dams have rusted over time and developed holes, leading to significant leakage. As a result, the structures are unable to retain adequate water, defeating their original purpose of boosting storage for agricultural use.
Farmers have complained that despite the presence of the check dams, water levels remain low, especially during dry spells, affecting crop cultivation and overall farm productivity. They have urged the authorities to undertake urgent repairs or replacement of the damaged gates to restore the utility of these water conservation structures.
Locals have also called for a comprehensive inspection of all ageing check dams in the taluka, warning that without timely maintenance, critical investments made in water infrastructure will continue to go to waste.
