An analysis of five-year coastal water quality data (2021–2025) under the National Water Monitoring Programme (NWMP) protocol at Miramar — the monitoring location closest to Caranzalem — has found that heavy metals such as manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni) are either negligible or below detection limits.
The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), responding to a report submitted by Goa University, stated that there is no direct correlation between coastal water quality and the presence of metals reported in fish samples.
According to the pollution control board, long-term monitoring data indicates that coastal waters near Caranzalem remain within acceptable environmental parameters with respect to metal contamination.
The GSPCB added that regular monitoring and scientific assessment under established national protocols will continue to ensure the protection of marine ecosystems and public health, while any emerging concerns will be addressed through appropriate regulatory measures.
