MLA Sankalp Amonkar attended a special meeting on coal pollution convened by the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), where he stressed that a clear and concrete roadmap must be prepared to permanently stop coal handling in Mormugao.
Addressing councillors, Amonkar cautioned against turning the sensitive issue into a political stunt ahead of the fast-approaching municipal council and assembly elections. He underlined that the fight against coal pollution should remain focused on public health and environmental protection rather than political gain. The MLA assured the council of his full support in all genuine efforts to halt coal operations in the region.
MMC Chairperson Girish Borker called for a special joint meeting involving the port authorities, coal handling units and MLAs to discuss the issue in detail. However, representatives of the Mormugao Port Authority and coal handling units did not attend the meeting.
During discussions, councillors resolved to pass formal resolutions demanding an end to coal handling in Mormugao and requested Amonkar to convene a joint meeting with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to take the matter forward.
Reiterating his stand, Amonkar said coal operations must be stopped for the better health of future generations. He again urged councillors to avoid politicising the issue and assured them that he would extend all possible support to the council to achieve the goal of making Mormugao coal-free.
