Ending weeks of speculation, Nitish Kumar has announced he will step down as Bihar Chief Minister to seek election to the Rajya Sabha, drawing the curtain on a tenure that stretched over two decades.
The 75-year-old JD(U) chief, who took oath for a record 10th term in November, said it had long been his ambition to serve in both Houses of the Bihar Legislature and Parliament. In a post on X, he thanked the people of Bihar for their trust, saying it allowed his government to usher in “a new dimension of development and dignity.” He assured continued guidance to the incoming administration.
Emotional scenes unfolded outside his residence at Anne Marg in Patna as party workers protested. Supporters from Nalanda alleged a conspiracy, with some even blaming a “liquor mafia” and internal party elements.
The Congress called the move a “coup,” with senior leader Jairam Ramesh accusing the BJP of orchestrating events. Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected in Patna amid the unfolding developments.
