The Captain of Ports Department has warned that no construction or development activity along riverbanks and inland waterways in Goa can be undertaken without prior approval from the department.
Captain of Ports Octavio Rodrigues said that several unauthorised embankments, jetty ramps and other structures have recently been noticed along riverbanks and within notified port areas.

Rodrigues emphasised that such works require mandatory clearance under existing regulations, even when they are carried out by government departments.
He explained that the rules apply to rivers, canals and other navigable waters up to five nautical miles from the coast. The regulations also cover the construction of jetties, docks, ramps and any other structures within 50 yards of the high water mark along riverbanks, regardless of who owns the land.
The Captain of Ports department has urged authorities and individuals planning development near waterways to obtain the necessary permissions to ensure compliance with maritime and environmental regulations.
