Centre Revokes NSA Detention of Climate Activist Sonam Wangchuk

The Centre has decided to revoke the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act, bringing an end to months of controversy surrounding his arrest. Wangchuk had been detained after protests in Leh in September last year, which focused on environmental concerns and regional issues in Ladakh. His detention had sparked widespread criticism from activists, civil society groups and environmental supporters across the country, who called for his immediate release.

The government’s decision to withdraw the NSA order is being seen as a significant development amid growing public pressure. Supporters of Wangchuk argue that his activism has always focused on climate protection and sustainable development in the fragile Himalayan region. With the revocation of the detention order, the issue is expected to calm tensions that had been building over the past few months.
