As tensions escalate in West Asia following attacks on Iran’s South Pars gas field and retaliatory strikes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian, emphasising the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation in critical waterways. In a post on X, PM Modi conveyed Eid and Nowruz greetings and expressed hope for peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. He also condemned attacks on key infrastructure, warning that they threaten regional stability and disrupt global supply chains.
Modi reiterated India’s commitment to ensuring safe shipping lanes, noting that nearly 20% of global oil and gas exports pass through the Strait of Hormuz—a lifeline for India, as roughly 40% of its oil, over 50% of LNG, and most LPG imports flow through this route. The government has assured citizens that domestic petrol, diesel, and LPG stocks are sufficient, and has increased allocation of commercial LPG, including 5 kg Free Trade LPG cylinders for migrant workers.
Earlier discussions with President Pezeshkian also focused on the safety of Indian nationals and the unhindered movement of energy supplies. India continues to prioritise dialogue, diplomacy, and proactive measures to secure its energy and economic interests amid rising regional tensions.
