Sal River Pollution Row: Salcete Panchayats Meet Vijai Sardesai, Seek Urgent Action on Sewage Crisis

Sarpanchs and panch members from Navelim, Cavelossim, and Varca met Vijai Sardesai on Tuesday, urging immediate intervention to address the worsening sewage pollution in the Sal River.

Representatives highlighted that the river, considered the lifeline of Salcete, is facing severe contamination due to untreated sewage allegedly flowing from drains in Fatorda and Navelim areas. They warned that the situation is adversely affecting livelihoods and daily life in the region.

The delegation also met the Fatorda MLA and expressed gratitude for facilitating discussions with relevant departments. They stressed the urgent need for coordinated action to curb pollution and restore the health of the river.

Responding to the concerns, Sardesai pointed to the Fatorda nala near the district hospital and the South Goa Planning and Development Authority wholesale and retail market as major sources of pollution. He informed that a joint inspection involving concerned departments has been scheduled for the following day.

Sardesai further stated that the issue would also be taken up with the Margao MLA and urged the Chief Minister and the BJP state leadership to intervene and ensure immediate measures to clean the river.

The demand for swift action reflects growing concern among local bodies over the environmental and economic impact of the ongoing sewage crisis.
