The Ahmedabad Crime Branch has arrested six men accused of running an online cricket betting racket from a flat near Memnagar, officials confirmed on Saturday. The group was allegedly placing bets on Friday night’s IPL match between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings using multiple online betting IDs.Acting on a specific tip-off, a police team raided a rented apartment in Anand Park Society around 11 p.m. Investigators said the flat had been taken exclusively for gambling-related activities. The arrested individuals have been identified as Kapil alias Chirag Thakkar (24), Abhay Thakkar (30), Yashkumar Akhani (30), Meet Jaiswal (25), Kalpesh Thakkar (35), and Dhruv Thakkar (27), all belonging to Banaskantha district.
According to officials, the group not only placed bets but also traded betting IDs with clients. Police seized 16 mobile phones worth ₹2.6 lakh and ₹50,110 in cash, bringing the total recovery to ₹3.1 lakh. Some members reportedly worked on a commission model, placing real-time bets on behalf of customers, while others directly participated in wagering across different platforms.Police are now pursuing additional suspects who fled before the raid. These include alleged betting ID suppliers Ronak Thakkar of Patan and Deep Thakkar of Ahmedabad. Authorities have also identified several customers linked to the operation, including residents of Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Bhabhar.
A case under the Gambling Act has been registered, and the Crime Branch said the investigation will continue until the entire network is dismantled. This crackdown follows a series of cricket-related offences handled by the city police. In June last year, four individuals were arrested in two separate incidents for illegally selling overpriced IPL 2025 final tickets outside the Narendra Modi Stadium. Earlier this March, a teenager was detained for attempting to resell ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final tickets at steep rates after purchasing them online.
