India is set to roll out its first-ever digital census, marking a major shift in data collection, with self-enumeration scheduled from April 1 to 15, followed by Phase 1 of the housing census starting April 16.
The exercise, being conducted under the Census Act, 1948, will be the eighth census since Independence and aims to leverage technology for improved accuracy and efficiency.

According to Cheshta Yadav, the digital census will feature a questionnaire comprising 33 questions and will be supported by a mobile application available in 16 languages, including Konkani.
Officials have assured that the process will incorporate end-to-end data security measures to protect the information of respondents.
The initiative represents a significant milestone in India’s administrative framework, as authorities seek to modernise census operations while ensuring wider accessibility and participation across the country.
