Goa extends loudspeaker hours on key festivals

The Goa government has permitted the use of loud speakers and public address systems till midnight on select festival days in 2026. The decision, taken by the Department of Environment and Climate Change, allows relaxation of noise rules between 10 pm and 12 midnight on specified occasions such as Easter, Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratri, Diwali, Christmas and New Year’s Eve. However, the permission will be subject to the Noise Pollution Rules and granted on a case-by- case basis. The issue of loudspeaker use has long been contentious in Goa, with residents frequently raising concerns over noise pollution, especially in residential areas and during late-night celebrations.

Courts and regulatory authorities have, in the past, enforced strict limits on sound levels and timing, generally restricting loudspeaker use beyond 10 pm. At the same time, religious bodies and community groups have consistently sought limited relaxations during major festivals, citing cultural and traditional practices.
