Amid rising geopolitical tensions, Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has taken a sharp dig at US President Donald Trump following Washington’s warning of a potential blockade in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Ghalibaf mocked the US move by highlighting the potential economic fallout, particularly rising fuel prices. In a post on social media platform X, he shared an image showing current petrol prices near the White House, cautioning Americans that they may soon “miss” those rates.
“Enjoy the current pump figures,” Ghalibaf wrote, adding that with the proposed blockade, Americans could soon feel nostalgic for gasoline priced at $4–$5 per gallon.
The remarks came shortly after the US military announced plans to begin enforcing a blockade on all maritime traffic entering Iranian ports starting Monday evening (Iranian time). The move is expected to significantly impact global oil supply routes, as the Strait of Hormuz serves as one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
Analysts warn that any disruption in this region could trigger sharp increases in global fuel prices, intensifying economic pressures worldwide and further escalating tensions between the two nations.
