Five members of a family were injured after a massive mango tree from a church compound collapsed onto their house late Sunday night at around 11:30 pm.
According to Flavia D’Costa, a Fabrica member, the tree suddenly gave way and fell on the residence, prompting immediate rescue efforts. The injured family members were first rushed to the Aldona Primary Health Centre (PHC) and later shifted to Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim, for further examination and scans.
One-and-a-half-year-old child sustained a head injury and required stitches on the forehead, while the child’s mother also suffered a head injury and began vomiting at the PHC, following which doctors advised her transfer to GMC for advanced care.
Peter, stated that the large mango tree, located beside his house, collapsed with half of it crashing onto his residence while the rest fell on the opposite side. “All my family members were inside when the tree fell. We were immediately taken to Aldona PHC and later to GMC for scans. Thankfully, the reports are normal, but the house and household items have been completely damaged,” he said.
Aldona MLA Adv Carlos Ferreira said he promptly alerted the fire brigade upon receiving information about the incident. “The fire personnel reached the site quickly and cleared the fallen tree. The house has suffered extensive damage, and the injured family members are now recovering. I urge people to take precautions and cut down trees that pose a danger, not only along roadsides but also within private properties. Safety of life is more important,” he stated.
Fire brigade officials confirmed that they responded swiftly to the emergency call and cleared the debris from the damaged house. Preliminary estimates place the loss at over ₹1.5 lakh.
Ward Member Pranesh Naik also visited the site and noted the extent of the damage. He said the timely intervention of the fire brigade helped prevent further harm, and the family narrowly escaped a more serious tragedy.
