ASHA BHOSLE: A LIFE IN MUSIC, A LEGACY ETERNAL

Widely celebrated for her versatility and influence on Hindi film music from the mid-20th century onwards, the 92-year-old singer remained one of the most enduring voices in Indian cultural history. Her passing at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital, following a heart attack and related cardiac and respiratory complications, marks the end of an era in the realm of Indian music. With her demise, the world bids farewell to a voice that shaped generations. Earlier in her career, Bhosle became known for her adaptability across musical forms. Rising to prominence in the 1950s and 60s, she performed across a range of genres including film songs, ghazals, bhajans, qawwalis and pop. Her work with composers such as O P Nayyar, R D Burman and S D Burman contributed to her widespread recognition.

Songs like ‘Aaiye Meherbaan’ (1958), ‘Parde Mein Rehne Do’ (1968) and ‘Dum Maro Dum’ (1971) remain among her notable recordings, while her duets with Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey continue to be widely remembered. Her musical journey had long extended beyond Indian cinema. In the early 1990s, she collaborated with international artists, including Boy George and recorded a track with R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe. She also worked with Australian cricketer Brett Lee in 2007, when they recorded ‘You’re the One for Me’. In 2020, she introduced an online talent show, Asha Ki Asha, and also launched a YouTube channel, an idea encouraged by her granddaughter Zanai, where she shared anecdotes from her career, attracting over 160,000 subscribers. She celebrated her 90th birthday in 2023 with a live performance in Dubai. Among her final recordings was a collaboration with the British virtual band Gorillaz for their 2026 album The Mountain, centred on themes of grief and mortality. Bhosle was celebrated for her remarkable ability to adapt her voice to evolving musical styles.
