Protests Erupt in Goa Over Alleged Remarks Against St. Francis Xavier; Complaints to Be Filed

Tensions are rising in parts of Goa as multiple groups have announced protests and police complaints over alleged derogatory remarks made against St. Francis Xavier, popularly revered as Goencho Saib.

A citizens’ group is scheduled to gather at the Margao Police Station at 11:30 am on Monday to file a formal complaint against Gautam Khattar, accusing him of insulting the saint and hurting religious sentiments. Organisers have described the alleged remarks as an attack on faith and identity, calling for unity and a strong response from the Goan community.

Later in the day, a press conference will be addressed by Jose Philip D’Souza and other community members at Supreme Hotel at 4:00 pm. The speakers are expected to condemn the incident and highlight concerns over communal harmony.

According to organisers, the controversy stems from statements reportedly made during a recent public gathering, where offensive references were allegedly directed at St. Francis Xavier, drawing widespread criticism and emotional reactions from sections of the public.

In addition, members and office bearers from local blocks have been urged to assemble outside the Old Goa Police Station at 3:00 pm to support the filing of another complaint in connection with the same issue.

Organisers have called on citizens to stand together in defence of unity, respect, and communal harmony, warning that silence could embolden further divisive actions. Authorities are expected to review the complaints and take appropriate action following due process.
