Communication is flow of our thoughts, feelings, ideas which are formed and conveyed in a verbal and non-verbal manner. We speak our mind through our words and by our choice of words we are able to leave an impression on the listener. Communication has various forms, verbal is what we speak, nonverbal is body language, postures and facial expressions. In our everyday communication, we display different communication styles viz Passive, Aggressive, Passive-Aggressive and Assertive.
To make any relationship work, communication plays a huge role. We cannot read minds hence, it’s necessary to speak your heart and mind whenever necessary for better clarity. The conversation that is carried forward exposes us to more learning and knowledge of the things talked upon. For survival of relationship communication is important to bridge gaps. It helps us know, understand and brings us closer to each other. Lack of communication increases misunderstandings and impacts the bond in a relationship.
For the relationship to last, we need to communicate frequently. The reasons for fallout in relationships is when we decrease communication to fix the problems that stepped in due to some random arguments. While most of us give importance to speaking in communication, however, listening is an important art to cultivate for effective communication. While speaking, we should avoid overlapping as this dilutes the essence of the conversation. Similarly, random interruptions while the person is talking is a no-no.
The tone in which we convey or address ourselves are barriers to a healthy communication if done inappropriately. It’s best to use the mirror technique to gauge tone. It’s not always what is said, but how it’s said, that makes the difference. We need to keep in mind factors such as time, tone, technique and truth. The speed, pace, voice at which we speak is vital. As this sets the clarity across to the one listening.
When there is mismatch in our tone, words, body language or incomplete information conveyed causes confusion. Our personalities and communication styles vary accordingly. Some of us are naturally shy or awkward with people around. Talking or conversing seems like a task and gets in the way for us to communicate so much so we limit our words or the conversation. Agreed, at times with our personalities some of us do have our inhibitions. So for us we will have try, practice and develop ourselves to some extent.
So the best strategy to be an effective communicator, we need to be a better listener and have an assertive approach. Let’s not forget communication is one of the key elements in image management. Which ultimately presents our personality. How we execute ourselves to people around us be it verbal or non-verbal.
If we work on our communication skills over a period of time, we can further develop our interpersonal skills, public speaking and listening skills to a great extent.
