Rishabh Pant dropped from Afghanistan ODIs as KL Rahul named Test vice-captain; Jasprit Bumrah rested

The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Tuesday announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, scheduled to begin on June 14 in Dharamsala. Young opener Shubman Gill has been handed the captaincy as India begin preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup cycle.Senior stars Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya were included in the squad after days of speculation surrounding their availability. However, the BCCI clarified that both selections remain subject to fitness clearance.

Sources had earlier indicated that the selectors, headed by Ajit Agarkar, were awaiting medical updates after the two Mumbai Indians players suffered injuries during the ongoing IPL 2026 season. Rohit has notably featured only as an Impact Player for Mumbai Indians in recent matches. The squad also marks a significant change in India’s wicketkeeping department. Rishabh Pant has been dropped from the ODI side after also losing his role as vice-captain in the Test setup. In his place, Ishan Kishan makes a return to India’s ODI team for the first time since 2023.Experienced players including Virat Kohli, vice-captain Shreyas Iyer and wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul retained their spots. The squad also features young names such as Prince Yadav, Nitish Reddy, Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey as India look to build bench strength in the 50-over format.
