Hockey World Cup: What India Need to Do to Reach the Semifinals

India’s hopes of reaching the semifinals of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 remain alive, but only through a narrow and complicated route after their 1-3 defeat to the Netherlands. The result left Craig Fulton’s side at the bottom of Pool E without a point from two matches. However, Argentina’s 3-1 victory over England has kept India mathematically in contention.

India now face a must-win clash against Argentina in their final Pool E match on Monday. To keep their semifinal hopes alive, India need to win by at least two goals. A two-goal victory would give India three points and could move them above Argentina, depending on the goal-scoring and goal-difference calculations. A victory by more than two goals would give India a stronger advantage on goal difference.

The challenge is significant, particularly given Argentina’s recent record against India. Argentina have already defeated India twice in the FIH Pro League this year, winning 8-0 and 4-2. India therefore need a substantial turnaround and, crucially, a convincing margin of victory to remain in the race for the last four.

But an Indian victory alone will not be enough. Their qualification will also depend on the result of the Netherlands-England match. The Netherlands currently lead Pool E with six points and a goal difference of +4. England and Argentina have three points each with a goal difference of zero, while India have no points and a -4 goal difference after scoring three goals and conceding seven.

The safest qualification scenario for India would be a two-goal victory over Argentina followed by a three-goal win for the Netherlands against England. For instance, if India beat Argentina 3-1 and the Netherlands defeat England 3-0, India would move ahead of England on goal difference and eliminate Argentina, with the Netherlands finishing top of the pool.

There could also be further complications involving the field-goal tie-breaker. If India beat Argentina 3-1 and England lose 3-1 to the Netherlands, the teams could finish with identical goals scored and conceded. In that situation, the field-goal count could become decisive. India currently have one field goal in the pool, scored by Dilpreet Singh against England, while England have three.

The schedule adds another layer to the equation. India will play Argentina at 6:30pm IST on Monday, while England face the Netherlands at 10:30pm IST. England will therefore know exactly what result they need when they take on the Dutch, based on India’s result earlier in the evening.

For India, the equation is brutally simple: beat Argentina convincingly, then hope the Netherlands do them a major favour against England. Anything less could bring their World Cup semifinal dream to an end.
