A few locals from Calangute were seen protesting outside a bar and demanding for a thorough investigation/probe into a recent incident which took place in the vicinity of the same dance bar in the village.

Well, it’s known that this bar and many others are currently operating illegally using restaurant licences and creating nuisance in the village of Calangute. And the reason why one can see more and more such bars coming up in Calangute today then that’s only because they are being fully backed by politicians, panch members and even some top officers from the Goa police Depart.
I think that the Calangutkars should unitedly come together this time and force the present government to immediately shut all such illegal bars to really promote quality tourism in their village to re-start singing Lorna’s most famous old track in a very big way in the whole of Goa in the near future.

Strict punishment for ragging
Ragging in degree and professional colleges and also universities is in vogue since decades. Ragging is not unique to India but is globally prevalent and in the USA it is called ‘hazing.’ Ragging can be physical, mental, verbal and in other forms. Ragging is considered to be a ceremonial breaking-in or an ice-breaker between seniors and freshers but sometimes serious ragging results in breaking bad.
It is a myth that after ragging there could develop comradeship between the students but this may be a fallacy since not all students will have physical, mental or psychological capacity to withstand ragging. Some may become vengeful on their tormentors. There are incidents of death caused due to ragging and suicide by the victims due to shame.
In 1999 the Maharashtra government enacted the anti-ragging law, in 2007 by the Central government and Supreme Court and in 2009 by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The educational institutions have anti-ragging cell and students are made to give an undertaking that they would not be involved in ragging and this is counter-signed by the parents.
The victims are afraid to inform their parents and teachers and nor do they file complaints due to repercussions from their seniors. It was shocking to read about the incident of ragging in the Goa Medical College and Hospital wherein a Goan student was allegedly assaulted in the hostel by four senior students who got away with rustication for three months from the hostel but not from the college. Obviously, the four students will find a better accommodation elsewhere and life will go on.

Nikhat shines bright in Istanbul firmament
India’s best national boxing champion Nikhat Zareen overcame a pugnacious Thailand’s Jutamas Jitpong to lift the IBA women’s world boxing championship title in the flyweight category (52 kgs.) with a superlative display of high class boxing skills and thus emerged victor with a unanimous 5-0 verdict.
It was Nikhat Zareen’s fifth unanimous verdict in the tournament, a sparkling feat. The Indian pugilist landed several combination punches on her Thai opponent to win her first world championship. Nikhat produced champagne stuff and was clearly the toast of the world championship with a superb display of `technical’ boxing. Thus Nikhat Zareen inherits the great Indian hope in women’s boxing.
May she continue her sterling run for India and bring more laurels in her future career.

Proper coordination needed for digging
The workers involved in a gas pipeline work damaged three 33kV underground electricity cables in Vasco thereby disrupting the power supply to the entire Mormugao constituency and parts of Vasco. These localities were without power supply for 22 hours. It must be said that road-digging by contractors have on several occasions also led to damage to underground water pipelines which resulted in water supply being cut-off to the households in the area.
This is the result of lack of coordination between the various departments like the PWD, electricity department and the civic bodies. It is observed that many a time newly tarred roads are being dug up ostensibly for some sewerage works. With proper coordination between the various departments the roads can be hot-mixed only after the digging for sewerage related work is completed.
In Goa it is mandatory for any organization, government departments, government undertakings, private bodies, local bodies or any individual who is desirous of undertaking earth digging to obtain written permission from the authorities concerned.

Safety of the electricity linemen
It is really sad to see that the electricity department linesmen are facing the hard time while doing their routine Jobs. First of all they don’t have a proper tools to carry the work, they even don’t have multi metre to check the voltage, and by taking the risks to their lives they see that the people get the power back.
There are so many different voltage lines going on top of the electricity Poles which are bent and can fall down anytime during the strong winds. Always there is a complaint against the street Poles lights. The electricity Sub department are sending the lights for repair but it takes long time to come back, and the bad words from the public have to be listened by the linesmen who are helpless and have to wait until the AE and JE doesn’t take any action.
Due to no proper safety to the linemen on duty, today we can see lots of linemen are facing problems, injuries to health and risk for their own lives.
So we request government of Goa, Power minister and department to improve the quality and standard of the electricity department by providing proper tools and facilities to the linemen so that they can serve the people better. Also do the underground cabling as soon as possible in the state of Goa to avoid accidents.

Power supply in Vasco restored
Almost 10 hrs there was power supply cut in some areas of Vasco on midnight of May 18 to May 22 till 10 pm .The affected areas were Mangor hill, Baina, Sada and town area.
The exact reason was not known but rumours is that some corporate private company while the trying to lay their cable broke electric cable and thus power supply in this areas got effected. Thanks to rain showers and climate for the day as it would have been difficult situation to bear the heat for the entire day. Due to rainy weather it was possible to pass the day.
It’s common now that power supply is getting disturbed after elections are over. The situation is becoming worse day by day due to power supply cut and people have been facing hardship in the summer. Under -round cabling with proper identification is important to avoid such situation of cable cutting, etc. The government should now concentrate on underground cabling of electricity as many poles are old and are with live wire being just bundled on poles to give supply, monsoon season is more dangerous as many live wires come down from poles and hang around which is danger for those passing on roads by two wheelers or by walk.
