Tourists show the way

This refers to “Tourists act where locals fail” (Herald Jan 28).  A group of Mumbai tourists literally took on the bus conductor for making unauthorized stops while the bus was on its way to Margao station. The tourists were agitated as the delay would result in them missing their train. They took the law into their hands and damaged the rear mirror of the bus. Destruction of public property cannot be condoned under any circumstances.
Goans, however, must take a lesson from this incident. The susegado lifestyle is history. This is an age of rapid transport and communication. It is changing rapidly. We need to change. Private buses are pulling us back by several decades. Goans must protest non-violently every time a driver stops or drives slowly for no reason. Buses must adhere to a strict ‘departure-and-arrival-at-destination’ schedule.
