FDA now online in Goa. First in the country with this facility.

PANJIM: Goa became the first state to introduce online food and beverage licensing and registration process in the country.

          The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s pilot project for registration and licensing of food establishments and vendors was made online on Tuesday by Goa Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

          FDA director Salim Veljiee said that Goa is the first state to implement the system covering the entire state, while in other parts of the country it has been implemented partially.

          Under this project, all the shops selling food items will be registered and issued a licence. FDA has almost 20,000 vendors registered with them.

          The director said that the online process will not just help in registering and issuing licenses but will also offer modification, renewal, transfer and suspension of licensing. “The inspection report prepared by FDA will also be available online,” he added.

          The project was launched at the hands of Food Safety commissioner and principal secretary (health) B Vijayan at Secretariat in Porvorim.

          “The state was identified by FSSAI for the pilot project considering the pace at which state FDA has managed to switch to new legislation,” Veljiee said.

          Addressing the people, Vijayan said that there is a need for a self regulatory authority in the state, which would conduct yearly inspections, giving some relief to FDA.

          He also urged FDA to create more and more awareness about the online system so that large numbers of vendors switch to this new system.
