Oppn grows to Pernem’s proposed casino project

MAPUSA: Expressing strong objection to the proposed casino project at Sukekolan, Dhargal in Pernem, people of different professions and forums organised one-day hunger strike outside the Administrative Complex, Pernem.

It may be recalled that under the banner of “Pernem Bachao Casino Hatao”, like-minded people had threatened to go on a hunger strike if the government authorities failed to revoke permissions issued to Delta Corp to set up a hotel project, which includes a casino, at Dhargal.

Now, Pernem locals have threatened to boycott the BJP government in the coming Assembly elections if the permissions are not revoked within the next seven days and also to make the protest a massive one with support of people across the State.

Parse Village Panchayat former sarpanch Devendra Prabhudesai said, “We never asked for such a project that will destroy the future of Pernem Taluka. We strongly object to the casino project. We had given an ultimatum to the government officials to revoke the permission by December 23, but it was not done. The permissions are issued without taking the people of Pernem into confidence.”

Swapnesh Sherlekar, member of Goencho Awaz, who also extended his support to this one day hunger strike said, “Files of the project are disputed and land is acquired fraudulently. In this connection, our forum had even written to the concerned government authorities but till date no action has been initiated. The government is only bothered how crony capitals will benefit.”
