Yet another year is on, with a day earmarked for celebrating womanhood. Although the pandemic and the horrifying Ukraine crisis may have dampened the spirits throughout the world, a few things go on, and the celebrations for the day took place, in some form. Although the practice of dedicating one day in a year to women has been in vogue, it should not be a mere ritual to honour the date rather than the woman, who needs to be acknowledged for her worth on an everyday basis. It could be anywhere – in family circles, at work place, during the commute, at the shopping centers and so on. The family cannot take a full-fledged homemaker for granted, or a career woman who doubles up as the kitchen maid upon return from work. Daily acts of kindness and gratitude go a long way in ensuring her positivity, and consequent well being. The family should at least volunteer with any small service like laying the table or clearing up. Even if incapable of this, at least a thankful attitude towards the lady goes some way to smoothen her brow.
Kudos to the men who go overboard in helping out with domestic chores!
It is fine to read articles about women empowerment or listen to speeches on the D-day, but what is the attitude in general regarding a woman in this era of an almost depraved society? Recently I got to know that a supposedly well read gentleman, senior to boot, had referred to a lady, a senior herself, as “baggage”. Was it due to the fact that she had lost her husband and was single? Had she become vulnerable as she had no protective male arm around her shoulders? It was shameful to hear such things spoken about a respectable lady and it felt good to learn that she got to know of it and responded with a mouthful at the “gentleman” on his face. Remaining single could be a matter of destiny or a personal choice. Unless the mindset of the common male does not alter, there is no significance in celebrating Women’s day on March 8. According to an adage, a man that respects the lady wins the world, but perhaps some men couldn’t care less.
A relative expressed that she was instilling the attitude of care and respect in her two sons towards any lady, who was to be regarded as a sister. I lauded her even more when she added that her sons never leave any venue till the last girl is picked up by her parents.
The seed of respect towards all women should be sown early in the wards by their parents or caretakers. Social media should support the circulation of such moral values. There should not be any need for any girl to be escorted or to carry a pepper spray in the bag.
So it all comes back to recognition of a woman for her worth on a daily basis, raising awareness of her rights on a continual basis and to accord her dignity on an everyday basis. It is needless to express that a lady should equally command respect by her word and deed.
