MARGAO: The Amendment to the Goa Agricultural Tenancy Act came in for strong objection at the meeting of the South Goa Zilla panchayat on Thursday, with members calling for the forthwith withdrawal of the Amendment.
Members also expressed their unhappiness over the delay in handing over the vacant space in the old South Goa district Collectorate for the Zilla Panchayat.
The motion tabled by Zilla member Kushali Velip opposing the Amendment to the Goa Agricultural Tenancy Act was unanimously adopted by the members. The motion received the support of Zilla Member Dayanand Pagi, who accused outgoing chief minister, Manohar Parrikar for dumping the Amendment on the poor tenants.
The Zilla also adopted a resolution congratulating Parrikar for his induction as the Union Defence Minister. Participating in the discussions, ZP member Dayanand Pagi said that Parrikar’s induction as the country’s Defence Minister is no doubt a proud moment for Goans, but hastened to add that the outgoing chief minister had failed on all fronts in Goa, especially in respect of mining, Regional Plan, dual citizenship issue plaguing Goans et al.
‘During the last two-years-and-a-half, Parrikar only gave assurances to the people on mining and regional plan. He failed to honour the promises made to the people of Goa,” Daya said.
On the office premises for the South Goa Zilla Panchayat in the old Colletorate building, Chairperson Nelly Rodrigues explained that the issue is pending after Parrikar’s decision to go the Centre. “Parrikar had promised to give us space, but before he could sign the document, he had to head to the Centre. I have taken up the matter with CM, Laxmikant Parsekar, who has sought time to look into the issue.” she said.
