MARGAO: The‘Save Mhadei, Save Goa’ group said the Centre’s support for the Mhadei diversion has been confirmed by a recent letter the
Chinchinim panchayat received from the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti (Water Resources).
The letter was sent to the Chinchinim panchayat in response to the resolution it took on December 3, to oppose the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the Karnataka government to divert the river.
“Abhiram Kumar, the Under Secretary to the Government of India has written to the Chinchinim panchayat, which was the first panchayat in Goa to take such a reso-lution, that the DPR in question has been found to be technically acceptable by the Central Water Commission (CWC) from hydrology and Inter-State aspects subject to certain strict compliance and the same was communicated by the CWC to the project authorities of the concerned States,” said activist Prashant Naik.
“This shows that the State government and the BJP Goa President Sadanand Tanavade were making a false show when they asked village panchayats to pass such resolutions. Chinchinicm panchayat had taken this resolution before the BJP made such a call. It looks like BJP and the State government is sleeping,” said Naik.
