VASCO: United Boys of Nerul defeated Saligao United 7-6 via the tie-breaker to advance into the semi-finals of 40th Bandodkar Memorial football tournament organized by Baina Sports Club, played at MPT ground, here, Wednesday. The score was 2-2 at full time.
Nerul opened their account in the seventh minute through striker Raj Chodankar off a pass by Sankit Gotlekar.
Saligao United found the equalizer in the 22nd minute through a spot kick by Nazir Shaikh. Saligao was awarded the spot kick when Nerul defender brought down Saligao’s striker inside the penalty area.
Nerul once again went into the lead in the 26th minute through Pio D’Souza off a Ryan Pereira pass. But Nerul could not maintain their lead for long with Saligao getting their much needed equalizer just before the breaker through John Menezes off an Ajit Diukar pass.
In the second half, both the teams played an attacking game but failed to score.
Inacio Pereira of Nerul was shown the yellow card for dangerous play by referee Seby Moraes.
In the tie-breaker, Nerul scored through Royston Pereira, Felix Baretto, Sankit Gotlekar, Siddharth Naik and Suraj Kalangutkar while Saligao scored through Uday Naik, Jolson Fernandes, Jesico Miranda and Virginio Shetty.
Sankit Gotlekar of Nerul was adjudged man-of-the-match.
