The skies at Miramar beach will be raided by a myriad
colours, shapes and sizes today. Yes we are talking kites again, but the
International Super Kite Festival promises to be a visual ‘flying’ treat like
never before. “We will have over 200 kites over the skies at Miramar,” affirms
Shailesh Amonkar, Chief Operating Officer, Sales and Marketing of the Sakal
Media Group, Pune which is conducting the event in Goa. “The scale of the
festival is such that 18 countries from world over including India are
participating. Last year we had held a similar festival in Pune where over 20
international and 43 Indian kite flyers participated. This year we have chosen
Goa as our venue,” he says while revealing that plans are afoot to make this an
annual event in the state.
What sets the festival apart from the others, he points out,
is the size and type of kites that will be flown. “The types of kites that will
be flown are the kind people rarely see around here. Some are in the shape of a
motorcycle, others a whale, and so on. Each country and flyer will have their
own kite. Most of them are large with some in the range of 100 feet in width
and height. One needs to see it to experience it. It’s a visual treat,” he
promises.

With participants arriving from USA, New Zealand, France,
Germany, Canada, Thailand, Singapore, China, Turkey, Spain, Malaysia, Italy,
Indonesia and Sweden among other countries, a few big names are joining the
party. “Some of the best kite fliers in the world, like Peter Lynn from New
Zealand, are participating. Peter’s giant show kites have a great appeal.
George Peters from the USA, Alexandre Grez, Laurence Grez and Clemence Grez
from France are some of the other big names,” reveals Amonkar.
