‘Nachom-ia-Kumpasar’ will now be catalogued in the Oscar
library. Though the film made Goa proud by making it to the Oscars, it sadly
could not make the final nominations. Still proving its merit on a global
scale, the film’s script has now been invited into the Oscar library.
Bardroy Barretto, the
director of the film, says, “It was important for us to get our film selected.
It’s really a big thing for Konkani cinema and for Goa. I am neither a poet nor
a writer, but it gives me great pleasure to know that I could do my bit.”

Agnelo Braganza, the producer of the film, also expresses
his delight: “When I got the official call that our film could not make it to
the nomination list of the Academy Awards, It did sadden me; however, when was
informed by the Margaret Herrick Library (Oscar Academy of Motion Picture) that
the script of the film has been invited to the library, i was truly delighted.
For us, it is such a proud feeling to know that our Konkani language will now
be read by the international filmmakers as the film will be accessed in the
reading room of library.”
‘Nachom-ia-Kumpasar’ was the first Konkani film to be
shortlisted in two different categories for this year’s Academy Awards. “The
invitation at the library documentation was a surprise gift for all of us. It
came unexpectedly and our entire team is happy and rejoicing.”
The Konkani films have slowly managed to make their
existence felt, not only at the state level but globally. Today, it’s not only
filmmakers in Goa but even the cast and crew associated with this film industry
that are gaining recognition.
The film in question, ‘Nachom-ia-Kumpasar’, is based on the
lives of two jazz musicians, Chris Perry and Lorna. The title comes from the
popular song by the two artistes. It has been directed by Bardroy Barretto and starsVijay
Maurya and Palomi Ghosh in the lead. The film has also won awards at the 62nd National
Film Awards. It had also won Lebara Play Audience Awards for Best Film at
London Indian Film Festival 2015.
Despite its accolades, the film continues to gain
popularity and is still running houseful in Goa. Agnelo is very hopeful that
they would be screening it in California too. “We will also be sending our film
for international film festivals,” says Agnelo.
