Every year, there is a tidal ripple that goes across the Mormugao area, one which culminates in
Waves of a very different, albeit welcome, kind. For those less in the know,
Waves is the annual cultural festival of BITS Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus. It
is a three-day-long festival held every year in the late October – early
November period; the first edition of which was held in 2006. The fest embodies
fun and frolic, devotion, dedication and lots of happiness.

shares exactly how it is that the people on campus perceive the event, saying
“Waves is a celebration of ever-rising ecstasy and exuberance packed in 72
hours. And as the ripples of BITSian festivity spread, it engulfs more
students, artists and resplendent performers than ever. Expectations from Waves
2017 are brimming, thanks to a plethora of pre-fest events, national
eliminations, theme and event releases keeping up the hype.”

Only a little while ago, a packed
auditorium, coupled with much anticipation, greeted comedians Karunesh Talwar
and Kunal Kamra at the Pre-Waves Comedy Night, which was a wholesome success,
gauging by the response of the audience. From 27 to 29 October, 2017, the
latest edition of Waves will also feature the hilarity of Delhi boy, Abhishek
Upamanyu and the hard hitting, Vipul Goyal.
The event is also going to entail the
following three ‘Pro Nites’, each dedicated to a different genre. EDM will fill
the air on the DJ Nite, which will feature the sounds of Diego Miranda. Past
editions have seen giants like Lost Stories and Nucleya perform, leaving the
crowd completely spent after a night of rave dancing. There is an English Nite,
which has featured performances by renowned artists, the likes of ‘The F16s’,
‘As We Keep Searching’, ‘The Blackstratblues’ and ‘Thermal And A Quarter’. And
the finale — ‘Bollywood a.k.a Hindi Nite’ — is perhaps the biggest. While the
epithet is self-explanatory, names like Amit Trivedi, Kailash Kher, and Shankar
Mahadevan, which have highlighted the occasion, need no introduction. This
year, the event will go bigger and better with Vishal Shekhar performing on the
much anticipated Bollywood Night 2017. Opening for them will be the
institution’s very own, ‘Music Society’.
There are also four Mini-Fests that constitute the fest
structurally. These include ‘Florence’ — a performing arts (dance, drama and
music) saga; ‘Beau Vista’ — a lifestyle fest; ‘Carpe Dictum’ — a literary fest
and ‘Specials’ — which host the flagship events. These are established pillars
of Waves, and include ‘Fashion Parade’, ‘Natyanjali’ and ‘Mr. & Mrs.
Waves’. These mini-fests showcase the talents and capabilities of the students
on campus, as well as over 180 participating schools.
Waves’ national eliminations have already been conducted
successfully, witnessing huge participation in nine cities for three different
events, viz. ‘SpinOff’ (DJing), ‘Show Me The Funny’ A.K.A. ‘SMTF’ (stand-up
comedy) and ‘Inverse’ (poetry slam) across the North, South, East and West
chapters. And one can’t forget India’s biggest college rock festival,
‘Searock’, which has gone ahead with six of seven eliminations already! It’s
noteworthy enough to mention that a number of new events were introduced this
time, which include the ‘Fashion Design’ event, the Hindi Poetry event ‘Irshad’
and the upcoming ‘Silent DJ’ event. Informals and online contests, with Waves
merchandise as prizes, are already up and running from the official Waves
Facebook page, which has created its fair share of buzz in colleges across the
country, going by the growing number of likes and shares.
In
conclusion, an elated Angad says “Honestly, Waves 2017 promises to be the best
and the biggest ever — taking every participant through a journey with a
mystical tale to tell!”
