You know how they say time flies when
you’re having fun? Well, right now I’m wondering what they would say about time
when one is excited. Because I am! It’s at moments like this that time seems to
jump into hyper speed for me, and this thought strikes me yet again as I glance
over at my bedside clock and it shows 1:23 in the morning through its neon blue
hues. The logical side of my brain screams “Go to sleep! You have to be up in a
few short hours for work!” But the stupid side of my mind just smiles goofily
and continues to dream… You see, by the end of today I will be sitting in a
plane with a whole bunch of friends and travelling to Malaysia!
What you must know is that the desire to
travel together as a group has been a long standing one. We’ve been discussing
it for years now and while the group has morphed, dynamics have altered and
destinations have changed, the wish to take a trip together has never wavered.
So much so that many a merry meeting has been held to ‘discuss travel plans’,
many a flavoured drink has been consumed and multiple plates of varied food
emptied during the said discussions. But at the end of it all, all those many
‘planned’ trips never happened. So what made it different this time around? We
planned after we booked the tickets! But that still hasn’t prepped me for the
journey.
For some reason best known to the universe
and not me, something or the other always crops when I’m trying to get
something done. So why should today be any different? Even though I’ve been
meaning to pack for days now (and by pack I mean throw a few things into a
small strolley), stuff has ‘just happened’. Like my brother’s birthday bash, a
fall down the stairs, an unexpected drive with the family, meetings galore,
etc… I mean, I just cannot seem to help it! So here I am, trying to do my
dad’s packing skills and teaching proud, while simultaneously trying to get it
done in the blink of an eye, when in walks another example of stuff that just
seems to happen – my four year old niece who steps up to help (like literally
steps up on a stool to get to the clothes in my cupboard). But all she seems to
end up doing is add to the chaos by pulling out old stuff from my cupboard that
I neither fit into now, nor would be caught dead in. Just when I think all hope
of quick packing is lost, she makes me melt with the line “You need this party
dress Ayesh. It looks cool,” and forget what I was there to do in the first
place. She then proceeds to prance around my room with one of my scarves,
pretending to be either Anna or Elsa from her favourite flick, Frozen while
getting me to follow suit. Goodbye packing plan!
And so it continues… From the packing to
the odd jobs I need to get done before I leave; from tying up loose ends at
work, to buying the things I need for my trip – every single thing gets pushed
to the last possible minute. As I rush between getting my travel documents
together, having my last shower before heading out the door, locking my bag and
typing in these last few words, it all seems to come together. And I’m off!
Only to get to the end of the road and discover that I’ve left my phone at
home… Dagnabbit and about turn! Sometimes I wonder why I do this to myself.
Maybe I’m an adrenaline junkie who thrives under the pressure of the last
minute dash, but just hasn’t realised it yet or admitted to the fact. But hey!
If it gets the job done, then so be it! Also, if it weren’t for all the madness
would my life be as interesting? Maybe not. So I’ll keep doing what I do best
and see you next week to share some madness from Malaysia… Toodles!
