40 petitioners get interim relief
PANJIM: Forty more petitioners from Moti Dongor, who filed for relief from demolition of their structures, were also granted interim relief of two weeks by the High Court of Bombay at Goa Thursday.

In an interim order passed on Wednesday, the Bench had stayed demolitions of some 210 structures at Moti Dongor and given time of two weeks to the State government to submit its proposal on the rehabilitation of these residents.
Both the petitions will be heard together.
Chandor rider crushed to death
CURCHOREM: A 34-year-old scooterist from Chandor was crushed to death by a tempo at Borimol-Quepem on Wednesday.
The driver of the tempo (MH-07-5694) has been arrested in this connection.
According to Quepem Police, the tempo was proceeding from Tilamol towards Quepem when it dashed against oncoming scooter (GA-08-L-8067) and ran over Mairice Pereira, causing serious injuries to his head, chest and abdomen. Pereira died on the spot.
Quepem Police arrested the tempo driver and ASI M Biradez is investigating the case.
Siolim resident consumes poison, dies
PORVORIM: A resident of Sodiem-Siolim died after he reportedly consumed poison at his residence on Wednesday.
According to Mapusa Police, Jairam Goltekar died while undergoing medical treatment in GMC Hospital in Bambolim. The body has been handed over to his relatives and PSI Sachin Lokre is investigating the case.
Male body found at Usgao
PONDA: An unidentified male body was found near a hotel at Tisk-Usgao on Wednesday.
According to Ponda Police, the body has been preserved in GMC Morgue in Bambolim for post-mortem. PSI Moahan Gaude is investigating the case.
Bungalow burgled at Chicalim
VASCO: Electrical, computer and other items worth Rs 1.89 lakh were stolen from a bungalow at Chicalim.
According to Vasco Police, Francisco Menezes complained that between 6.30 pm on February 19 and 9.45 am on February 20 some persons entered his under construction bungalow at Chicalim through the balcony.
The burglars decamped with electrical wires, switches, MCBs, sockets, DP boxes, adapter and one door bell, four ceiling fans, two moulding machines, two marble cutting machines, one drill machine, computer, printer, etc, all worth 1.89 lakh. PSI Nikhil Palekar is investigating the case.
Mechanic accused of forgery
PORVORIM: A refrigeration mechanic has been accused of forging the signature of a man from Curtorim to seek information under RTI.
According to Porvorim Police, M Dias from Curtorim complained that on February 12, the accused had forged his signatures on a letter to the Chief Secretary with a request to furnish information under RTI. PSI V Durbhatkar is investigating the case.
Laying of pavers at Sancoale temple
PANJIM: Power and Housing Minister, Milind Naik inaugurated the work of laying of pavers and benches to the Shree Ganesh Sakhalyo Prasann Temple at Sancoale.
The project, undertaken at a cost of Rs 9 lakh, was carried out by Sancoale ZP member Aparna Naik through the South Goa Zilla Panchayat. The project was inaugurated on the occasion of Vardapan Din (anniversary) of the temple at Sancoale on February 17.
Others present at the function included Khola ZP member Krishna Velip, Sancoale Sarpanch Narayan Naik, Panch Ramakant Borkar, ex-sarpanch Bhoj Naik, Shekhar Shetty, Topu Naik and Subhash Naik.
Manch against move to ban house tax
PONDA: The Madkai Rashtrahita Manch (MRM) has objected to government’s decision to abolish house tax in all the panchayats in the State.
In a three-page objection letter to the Directorate of Panchayats, MRM Convenor Digambar Naik stated that Part IV of Directive Principles of State of Policy under Article 40 of Constitution of India, the State has been obligated to empower organisation of village panchayats to enable them to function as local self-government.
“Hence, the question of waiving/abolishing of house/building tax in panchayat by the Goa State government absolutely does not arise. If the State government waives house/building tax in all the 189 panchayats in Goa, it is a clear violation of Article 40 of the Constitution of India,” stated the letter.
“Under Section 153 (1) of Goa Panchayat Raj Act 1994, panchayats have been empowered to impose/revise rate of house/building tax, etc, once in every three years by minimum increase of 10 per cent. Waving of house tax is a violation of the act,” stated Naik.
“Economics, social and cultural development of any state, country or panchayat is purely based on taxes collected from citizen,” added the letter.

Trajano meets Governor
PANJIM: Lokacho Adhar President Trajano D’Mello Thursday met Goa Governor Bharat Vir Wanchoo with a request to direct Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to hand over the Excise scam to the CBI. “I have requested the Governor to use his office to direct the chief minister to transfer the case to CBI with all documents, he (Parrikar) had said in the Assembly as the Leader of Opposition, that he would submit it to CBI,” D’Mello told a press conference after meeting the Governor at Raj Bhavan, Dona Paula.
D’Mello said that Parrikar had alleged that the fraud was to the tune of Rs 50 crore and held the then Excise Commissioner Sandip Jacques responsible for the scam.
Claiming that he has got Parrikar’s Assembly debate copy through the RTI, D’Mello further said that recommendations in the Finance Secretary’s report has till date not been forwarded the department. D’Mello also termed Jacques as ‘good officer’ citing that neither action nor investigation has been initiated against him.

Conference on migration patterns
PANJIM: The Department of Geography of Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science, Margao, will organise a two-day interdisciplinary international conference on ‘Human Migration in South Asia: Patterns, Development and Challenges’ on February 22 and 23. The conference will discuss issues such as refugees, labour laws, remittance, economy, regional cooperation, and other factors. Reputed delegates from India and other SAARC nations will attend the sessions.
The conference will have Dr Wilfred Menezes Mesquita, Commissioner for NRI Affairs as the chief guest for the inaugural Function. Professor Irudrya Rajan, Director of Centre for Development Studies at Thiruvananthpuram, will deliver the key note address and Dr Nandkumar Sawant will also propose the vote of thanks.
