Earth Day celebrated at Big Foot
PANJIM: Earth Day was observed at Ancestral Goa, a centre for preservation of art, culture and environment, at Big Foot, Loutolim on the theme ‘How do I help save earth? – let’s talk solutions’. It started with a panel discussion comprising of Shabana Kazi from TERI, Sujeet K Dongre from CEE and the moderator Sultanat Kazi. On behalf of Fomento Green, a power-point presentation of solutions to waste dumping sites was shown by Chetan Zaveri.

Mass by Lankan Bishop at Sancoale
PANJIM: Bishop of Kandy, Sri Lanka, Vianney Fernando, will celebrate Mass at the Shrine of Blessed Joseph Vaz, Sancoale, on April 26 at 4 pm. Bishop Fernando will pray for the early canonization of Bl Joseph Vaz. Devotees of Bl Joseph Vaz are invited to take part in the Holy Eucharist. The visiting prelate will also celebrate Mass at Cruz dos Milagres Church, Boa Vista Hill, Old Goa, on April 27 at 4 pm. Bishop Fernando is the president of the Blessed Joseph Vaz National Secretariat of Sri Lanka.
One held for murder
MARGAO: A 35-year old native of Jharkhand was killed at a basalt quarry at Barcem village last night by his co-worker, also hailing from Jharkhand. In swift action, Cuncolim police arrested Lawrence Banjoe for the murder of his co-worker Sumit Topno, 35 also hailing from Jharkand, on April 25 at 5 am. According to Cuncolim police, they received a complaint stating that accused Banjoi set ablaze a small house of Pandari Velip, destroying household articles and thereafter assaulted Topno with an iron rod on the head, killing him instantly. Cuncolim PI Raju Raut Dessai who arrested the accused registered an offence under section 302, 436, 506(II) IPC against accused Banjoe and further investigation is in progress.
Kolhapur native falls, dies
COLLEM: A 42-year-old native of Kolhapur residing at Madhlawada-Sancorda, died after he fell in a plantation near his residence on Wednesday. Collem Police have sent the body of Issak Mujavar to the GMC morgue in Bambolim for a post-mortem. PSI Sachin Lokare is investigating the case.
10 year-old kidnapped
CALANGUTE: A 10-year-old boy was reportedly kidnapped from Kobra Waddo, Calangute. According to Calangute Police, the boy’s mother complained that unidentified persons kidnapped her son at about 9 am on April 22. Calangute Police registered the case under Section 363 IPC and Section (8) (1) of Goa Children Act and PSI Mahesh Gadekar is investigating.
Riders injured in mishaps
BICHOLIM: A motorcycle rider from Nanora was injured in a road accident at Bamanwada-Nanora, Bicholim. According to Bicholim Police, Shekhar Kanolkar was proceeding in his motorcycle (GA-01-L-2316) when he was knocked down by a truck (GA-01-U-7165). The truck driver fled. Kanolkar sustained injuries and Head Constable D A Bordekar is investigating the case.
PORVORIM: A 25-year-old resident of Porvorim was injured in a road accident at Porvorim Bazaar. According to Porvorim Police, Shobha Pednekar of Porvorim complained that a speeding unidentified vehicle, which was proceeding from Panjim to Mapusa, knocked down an oncoming motorcycle (GA-02-M-5653) near Dr Sidney Pinto Hospital, Porvorim. The driver fled from the site.
Police said the motorcycle rider, Sanjay Pednekar, sustained injuries and they are investigating.

Mapusa beef shops remain closed
PORVORIM: Beef shops in Mapusa market remained closed for the third consecutive day on Thursday due to non-availably of beef. There was no supply of beef in the market following the temporary suspension of animal slaughter at the Goa Meat Complex. There was an acute shortage of beef in Mapusa and workers at various beef stalls are worried about their future. “The decision of the High Court has shattered our livelihood. We cannot do other jobs and if this issue is not solved immediately or if our owner does not import beef from neighbouring states, we will be rendered unemployed,” feared a worker.
