Siolim local dies in Verna mishap
VASCO: A 44-year-old jeep driver from Siolim died, while other occupants were injured in a road accident at Verna bypass. One person has been arrested in this connection.

According to Verna Police, the accident occurred when Gaurish Sharma from MP allegedly drove his car (GA-01-J-4824) in a rash and negligent manner while proceeding towards Margao.
Police further informed that the car dashed against the oncoming jeep (GA-03-P-1667), which was proceeding from Margao. The jeep driver, Rayu Dabolkar, and other occupants sustained injuries. Dabolkar succumbed to injuries and police later arrested the accused in the connection.
Ponda local dies after consuming poison
PONDA: A 50-year-old resident of Khadapaband-Ponda died after he reportedly consumed poison.
According to Ponda Police, Rajendra Tiwari was admitted in GMC Hospital in Bambolim after he consumed poison at Curti-Ponda and died while undergoing treatment. PSI S L Hunsikutti is investigating the case.
Jeep stolen at St Cruz
OLD GOA: A jeep was reported stolen from near Shaba Arcade Building, St Cruz.
According to Old Goa Police, Rajkumar Tangsale, security officer, St Cruz, complained that between 11 pm on January 26 and 6.30 am on January 27, some persons stole a Bolero jeep (GJ-17-N-49), which was parked near Shaba Arcade building, St Cruz. PSI R Shirodkar is investigating the case.
Two injured in hit and run case
PORVORIM: A scooterist and a pillion rider were injured after they were knocked down by a speeding car at the Bodginim Mapusa-Canca junction.
According to Mapusa Police, Lawrence Braganza from Mapusa complained that on Friday, the driver of the car (GA-03-P-1114), which was proceeding from Parra to Mapusa, dashed against the scooter (GA-03-F-4672) from the rear.
Police further informed that scooterist and pillion rider, Babani, sustained injuries. Police said the car driver fled from the spot. Police is investigating the case.
Mormugao local held for assaulting couple
VASCO: Mormugao Police arrested a man from Rumdawada-Mormugao on charges of assaulting a couple from the same ward.
According to Mormugao Police, Vinayak Shetkar (52) from Rumdawada complained that on Sunday, the accused Uday Naik (52) assaulted his wife, Vivanti, with a brick and she sustained head injuries. The complaint further stated that the accused had also assaulted Vinayak. The accused was arrested and later released on bail. Police is investigating the case.
K’taka native held for demanding dowry
PONDA: Ponda Police booked a native of Castle Rock, Karnataka, on charges of demanding dowry and harassing his wife.
A complaint to this effect has been lodged by his wife from Curti-Ponda.
According to Ponda Police, the accused is staying separately along with their child at Castle Rock and whenever the victim would go to meet her child, the accused would allegedly assault and even demand money from her.
The complainant suspected that she is being harassed because her husband is involved with another woman. Police said the accused is absconding and PSI Sadashiv Hansikutti is investigating the case.
Corlim forum wants action initiated against roadside parking
OLD GOA: In a bid to prevent parking of vehicles by the roadside in Corlim, he Corlim Citizens, Civic and Consumer Forum (CCCCF) has requested the Old Goa Police to take strict against those owners found parking their vehicles by the roadside.
In a letter to Old Goa PI Manoj Mardolkar, CCCCF Secretary Baptist Pereira stated that the parking of vehicles along the narrow roads in Corlim cause hindrance to motorists and pedestrians, especially at night.
“Public roads should not be allowed to be used as a parking lot for repair, as most of the places where public buses are parked are also used for maintenance works,” stated Pereira in the letter.
“There is a urgent need to take outmost care of the village as safety of women is concerned and parking of vehicles on the roads at night could be an advantage to such criminals and thefts taking place in and around the area,” states the letter.
Mumbai consultant finalised for Porvorim project
PORVORIM: Goa Housing Board (GHB) has selected S N Bhobe & Associates Pvt Ltd, Vashi-Mumbai, as project management consultant to construct the new market in Housing Board Colony at Porvorim.
It may be recalled that some portion of the rooftop of the existing market in the Housing Board Colony had collapsed in August 2012. Housing Minister Milind Naik and Goa Housing Board Chairman Glen Ticlo had visited the market following request from Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaute.
After inspecting the market, they had announced that GHB will soon appoint a consultant to construct new market and will try to complete the project within 2 years. However, it took nearly six months for the GHB to finalize project consultant.
According to reliable sources, the GHB will issue work order to S N Bhobe & Associates shortly and will be directed to submit feasibility report, drawings, etc, within 2 months. Thereafter, the work will be tendered by GHB, informed sources.
Work on to repair Selaulim Irrigation Project canal
SANGUEM: While the state celebrated Republic Day on Saturday, contractors and workers were busy with the repair work on the damaged portion of the Selaulim Irrigation Project canal.
Heavy machinery were deployed at the site, as efforts were on to complete the repair work at the earliest so that irrigation water could be restored to the affected farmers in South Goa.
Many trucks were pressed into service to transport mud to fill the breached portion of the canal and mud was procured from the nearby Nagvem village.
Sources told Herald that the work would continue well into the night, with necessary arrangements made for power supply.
Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services saves lives, property in 2012
PANJIM: An annual report of the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services shows that properties worth Rs 451.91 crores were saved from fire and other hazards during the last calendar year.
The report further documents that the department attended a total 5,529 fire and non-fire emergencies calls during this period and saved 149 human and 320 animal lives.
On the other hand, properties worth Rs 15.14 crores were destroyed and three people died in fire incidents and 115 died due to other accidents.
The department has trained 2,072 candidates in fire fighting, fire prevention and rescue technique during the previous calendar year.
Our Lady of the Rosary feast at St Cruz
PANJIM: The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary Church, St Cruz, was celebrated on January 27 with great pomp and gaiety.
There were Masses at 6, 7:30, 9 and 11:30 am and all saw a large attendance.
Rev Fr Simon Fernandes of Rachol Seminary was the main celebrant for the feast Mass and preached at all the Masses. He stressed the need to be faithful to our faith by its proclamation stressed the need to be faithful to our Faith by its proclamation, ‘bhavarth ucharunk, somorombhunk ani porgottunk Maria amkam nomuno’. He also appealed to people for fervent prayer as the year has been dedicated as the year of faith.
Revs Fr Alexandre Pereira, Fr Walter De Sa, Fr Santiago, Fr Justin, Fr Santana D’Souza, Leenoy Dias, Fr Luis Gomes and Fr Noel Da Costa con-celebrated the feast Mass.
Thousands attended all four Masses and took part in the procession of Our Lady of the Rosary.
Many people from different communities and surrounding places visited the fair which will continue for at least a week.

Don Bosco Alumni feast
PANJIM: The feast of St John Bosco, patron saint of the Salesians, will be celebrated on January 31 with the festive high mass at 6 pm, at Don Bosco ground, Panjim. It will be followed by a cultural programme.

Underground power line in Porvorim
PORVORIM: The work to lay the 18-km underground power line from Tivim to Porvorim has been completed and while one cable will cater to 24,000 consumers of Porvorim, the second cable will provide power supply to consumers of Saligao and Candolim.
Speaking to Herald, the officials of Porvorim sub-station informed that two separate cables have been laid from Tivim to Porvorim, at a cost of Rs 13.4 crore.
“One cable will cater to the requirement of 24,000 consumers from Porvorim, while the other cable is for power supply to Saligao and Candolim,” said an official. “There were frequent power disruptions in Porvorim, Saligao and adjoining villages due to snapping of old power supply lines, insulator failures, etc. The situation was worst during monsoons,” added the official.
“The Electricity Department decided to lay an underground cable. Since there were some objections from farmers to lay cables in their fields, the work suffered some setback,” said the official. “Once the testing is over, residents of Porvorim, Saligao and Candolim will get better power supply even during the rains. The department has decided to add an additional 10 MVA power transformer to Porvorim sub-station to provide reliability to power supply,” added the official.
Tawadkar asks for people’s co-operation on garbage issue
CANACONA: Sports Minister, Ramesh Tawadkar, has asked residents to be responsible enough to handle the garbage issue from their homes and to assist the government in tackling garbage across the state.
“Without public participation, no government can achieve any goal especially which evolves and demands the responsibility of each and every citizen,” said Tawadkar, after unfurling the tri-colour at Deputy Collectorate office in Chaudi on Saturday.
Tawadkar also took the guard of honour by the Canaocna police led by PI Harishchandra Madkaikar and a march-past by students of St Teresa of Jesus High-School, Chaudi, Shree Mallikarjun Vidyalaya, Char-Rasta, Shri Katiyani Baneshwari and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya.
Tiny tots of the Anganwadis from Bhatpal and Welwadda, Poinguinim also presented skits.
Canacona Chairperson, Ajay Bhagat, councillors, freedom fighters, Dy Collector, Prashant Shirodkar, Canacona mamlatdar, Sudin Natu and other government officials were present at the function.
Corlim panch by-polls being discussed
OLD GOA: The recent death of Corlim panch, Purshottam Dhulapkar, has already sparked off talks on possible candidates to contest the bye-elections from ward 5 of Corlim panchayat.
It may be noted that Dhulapkar, who was elected in the 2012 panchayat elections from Ward 5 (Dhulapi) in Corlim, passed away recently and his death will necessitate by-polls to elect a new panch to the ward.
“Not even 10 days have passed since the death of Dhulapkar and some locals have already begun moves to contest the by-polls. Two candidates who had contested the previous panchayat elections have even met a prominent politician to work out the likely candidate for the upcoming panchayat by-elections,” said a local from Dhulapi.
One convicted for causing hurt
MARGAO: South Goa additional district & sessions judge, Vijay D Pol convicted Arjun Laxman Masurkar, 48, resident of Khatolem, Valpoi, under section 326 IPC (causing grievous hurt by assaulting with deadly weapon).
The accused was sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment of five years and to pay a fine of Rs 50,00 or in default to undergo six months rigorous imprisonment.
Public prosecutor Subhash Dessai argued on point of sentence that the accused inflicted head injury by using an iron rod and maintained that the crime deserved severe condemnation. He prayed for a severe sentence to have a deterrent effect.
The accused prayed for leniency citing that his son was schooling.
The incident occurred on July 5, 2010 at 6.15 pm at Molem. The accused assaulted his wife Geeta with the help of the iron rod on her head causing her grievous hurt and thereafter fled away from the spot.
Agra resident complains of theft
MARGAO: Sudhir R Malhotra, hailing from Agra, Uttar Pradesh on Sunday complained to Margao police that between 3 pm and 3.10 pm while he was travelling from Margao bus stand to Hubli on a KSRTC bus near Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, unknown persons committed theft of cash Rs 70,000 and two cheques of Rs 13,500 and Rs 15,000 from his black colour pouch bag.
Police have registered an offence of theft against unknown persons and PSI S G Chavan is investigating.
Fire in bus doused in time
MARGAO: The Margao Fire Services had to rush a fire tender to the KTC Bus Stand following a call that a bus had caught fire this morning. A fireman informed that the vehicle caught fire due to a suspected short circuit, but the same was put off immediately before it could spread to a house.
Blood donation camp held
MARGAO: Plus Point Gym & Health Club & Utth Kukalkar Sanghatana with medical support from Hospicio Blood Bank organized their annual Voluntary Blood Donation Camp on Republic Day at Balli, Cuncolim.
Around 64 persons donated blood for the cause of needy on the occasion. The camp was inaugurated at the hands of Govind Devappa Dessai in the presence of Dr Vasundhara Dessai of Hospicio Hospital. Chairman of Goa Law Commission Narendra Sawaikar and Cuncolim MLA Rajan Naik who were the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour expressed happiness on the organization of the camp.
