Macedo elected Institution of Valuers chief
PANJIM: Lloyd Macedo was elected unopposed as chairman of Institution of Valuers Goa Branch.

The Institution of Valuers Goa Branch held its annual general body meeting at Hotel Nanutel, Margao, on January 4.
Other executive members elected are Shravan Dubhashi (vice-chairman), Allwyn Facho (secretary) and Thomas D’Costa (treasurer) for the tenure spanning year 2013 to 2015.
Earlier, Vincent Gracias, the outgoing secretary, gave an account of the activities held by the Goa Branch during the past three years.
Goa Branch member, P C Gupta, was felicitated for being elected to the Central Executive Council of IOV, New Delhi and Mahendra Caculo was felicitated for securing silver medal for 2012 at the Annual General Body Meeting of the IOV held at Amritsar in January 2013, for his article on ‘Valuation of Investment Properties’ published in the magazine ‘Indian Valuer’.
The meeting was followed by an enlightening presentation by the outgoing chairman Mahendra Caculo on ‘Valuation: The Changing Contous’, where he traced the history of ‘Valuation Discipline’ from 1834 to the present times highlighting the challenges faced by the valuation professionals at present.
Novenas of Bl Joseph Vaz get underway
CORTALIM: The novenas of Patron of Goa and Daman Blessed Joseph Vaz got underway at his Sancoale sanctuary on Monday with around 5000 pilgrims attending the masses on the first day.
The feast of Blessed Joseph Vaz, will be celebrated at Sancoale on January 16.
Masses during the novena days will be at 6, 7.30 and 9 in the morning and at 4 and 6 in the evening.
A retreat will be conducted on January 9 from 10 am to 3 pm and childless couples will be prayed over for the gift of a child.
A day of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held on January 11 from 10 am to 3.30 pm (A day of prayer and fasting).
A night vigil will also be conducted on January 11 from 10 pm to 5.30 am to pray for much-needed miracle through the intercession of Blessed Joseph Vaz. An inter-religious meet will be held on January 12 at 10.30 am, while a special Mass for the sick will be celebrated on January 13 at 9 am.
On the feast day (January 16) Masses will be celebrated at 5, 6, 7 and 8 in the morning and 4 pm and 5.30 pm. Archbishop-Patriarch Felipe Neri Ferrao will be the main celebrant at the concelebrated feast Mass at 10 am.
A procession from the Sanctuary to the Paternal House of Blessed Joseph Vaz at Sancoale followed by Mass will be conducted at 12 pm.
Farewell function organised
PANJIM: A farewell function was organised at Commercial Tax Office, Bicholim ward on the occasion of retirement of Jaganath B Naik, staff member of Bicholim ward after attaining the age of superannuation and serving 31 years to the Commercial Tax Department of the Government of Goa.
Mhadav V Mhaskar, Asstt Commercial Tax Officer, Bicholim ward in his welcome speech welcomed the guests present for the function which was attended by Maria C Varella, Commercial Tax Officer, Bicholim ward who was the chief guest for the function.
A large number of public, dealers, and practitioners were present for the function.

DFSC calendar released
PANJIM: Stella Marie Chapel community celebrated Family Day, on the occasion of ‘Holy Family Sunday’, in the octave of Christmas Season. The day began with the Eucharistic celebration by Rev Fr Kenneth Teles, Director of Diocesan Family Service Centre (DFSC) and Chaplain of Stella Maris Chapel Miramar. Later, a pocket calendar, which highlights the work and mission of the Diocesan Family Service Centre was released.
The calendar speaks of the various programs to be held by each of the six Departments of the DFSC.
Navy hosts Family’s Day
VASCO: Indian Navy hosted a Family’s Day at sea off the Goa coast recently.
In a show of maritime might, western fleet ships ‘INS Betwa’ (Multi Role Frigate), ‘INS Teg’ (newly inducted stealth frigate), ‘INS Subhadra’ (OPV), ‘INS Aditya’ (Tanker), ‘Kondul’ and ‘Cankarso’ (Fast attack crafts) participated in the day at sea.
Governor Bharat Vir Wanchoo was the chief guest and witnessed the event from ‘INS Betwa’. A host of senior dignitaries and VVIPs from Goa were hosted by Rear Admiral BS Parhar, Flag Officer Commanding Goa Naval Area.
Over 2,000 families including members of the media participated in the ‘Day at Sea’, where various fleet exercises were showcased to the civilian populace of Goa. The exercises included search and rescue ops, replenishment at sea, anti-aircraft firing, etc.
A flypast of naval aircrafts Sea Harriers, the newly inducted MIG 29 K fighter aircraft, Dornier, Chetak, Kamov 31 aircraft from Hansa was also showcased during the ‘Day at Sea’.
Goenchim Kirnam excel
PANJIM: Goenchim Kirnam Deusua- Pernem led by Cosme Fernandes won the first prize in both original and traditional category of the 9th all Goa Mando festival organised by Tourism Airline Management Education TAME, Goa in association with Department of Art and Culture held recently by Pai Tiatrist Joao Agostinho Fernandes indoor Auditorium, Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.
The runners up were Mando Moggi, Margao led by Pervez Gomes and consolation prizes were won by Goenchim Svadik Naad, Majorda led by Michael Gracias, Aquenchim Surgam, Aquem led by Philoo Cardozo, Manorachim Motiam – Raia led by Fr Bernard Cotta and for Traditional category was Candeiachim Kirnam, Pomburpa led by Fr Diego Souza.
The festival was declared open with the lighting of ceremonial lamp at the hands of Nagesh Hegde, Chartered Accountant and Capt Prakash Casto who also released the TAME souvenir.
Noted Mando writer, dancer and adjudicator, Arlindo Miranda was presented the coveted TAME Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution towards Mando.
Swami Anubhavanandaji to visit Goa
PANJIM: World renowned spiritual leader H.H Swami Anubhavanandaji will be in Goa from January 12 to 16. During his stay he will conduct special discourses in English and Hindi at Shree Mahalaxmi Temple, Panjim. His discourse on ‘Kathopanishad’ in English will be in the morning, between 6.30 am to 7.30 am, while he will guide the people on ‘Nauvidha Bhakti’ in Hindi in the evening, between 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm. The discourses are organized by the Goa Unit of Sat Bhavana Trust and is open to public, says a press release.
Hearing against Majorda sarpanch
MARGAO: The Director of Panchayats will hear a petition filed against the Sarpanch of Majorda Moises Vaz on January 9 for his removal as Sarpanch and also as a member of the village Panchayat.
The petition filed by Silvester Vaz further alleged that the panchayat secretary has failed to discharge her duties as per Section 113-A of the Act to maintain the custody of the panchayat records. In his petition, Vaz claimed that an affidavit filed by the Power of Attorney holder of a starred resort was removed from the construction file in order to deny the three-meter public access to the villagers.
He said that inspection of the construction file revealed that the reference of the affidavit was reflected on the construction license at point No 17 under terms and condition of construction license.
Cuncolim college awarded ‘B’ grade
MARGAO: Cuncolim Education Society’s College of Arts and Economics, Cuncolim has been awarded “B” grade by NAAC Peer Committee. The NAAC Peer Committee had visited the College on July 23-25 last and assessed the college on the criterion curricular aspects; teaching, including learning and evaluation, research, consultancy and extension; infrastructure and learning resources; student support and progress, governance and leadership and innovative practices.
They also assessed and ascertained views and opinions of well wishers, alumni, parents, management and have assessed all 13 departments of the college.
The College said that the team expressed its satisfaction over the healthy academic ambience, effective leadership of Principal Dr Laximan G Naik, committed management, performance of students in University exams.
Principal Naik said the NAAC has recommended to the college to start short term courses and go for more program option, and explore more and more research potential.
Driver’s appeal dismissed
MARGAO: South District and Sessions Judge, Nutan Sardesai on Monday dismissed the appeal filed by accused Feroz Mohammad Ali Agha, of New Vaddem-Vasco challenging the order of JMFC, Vasco judge Bosco G F Robert.
Agha was convicted and sentenced to undergo six months simple imprisonment u/s 279 IPC and pay a fine of Rs 1000 in default to undergo 30 days simple imprisonment.
The accused who is a driver by profession, was charged for driving Tata mini bus while proceeding from Chicalim to Vasco on March 5, 2010 in a rash and negligent manner near Goa Shipyard, Vasco. The driver lost control as result of which the bus fell in nearby nullah causing simple injuries to the passengers.
Anticipatory bail fixed for order
MARGAO: Arguments in the anticipatory bail filed by accused Vassu Bhuto Ghaonkar, Dabal, were heard by additional sessions judge Vijay Pol and the matter has been kept for order on January 9.
Ghaonkar along with Babal alias Parshuram Dhorte, of Xelvona, Cuchorem, Somnath Basu Laani, Dabal, Roshan Mali and Durgalal Meena both from Guddemol, Sanvordem are accused of committing offence under section 286 read with 34 IPC and Section 3 of Explosive Substance Act.
Minor girl handed over to police
MARGAO: A seven-year old special girl child who was found loitering near Maruti Mandir, Davorlim on Monday afternoon was handed over to Maina Curtorim police for protection by the local residents.
Maina Curtorim PI Gurudas Kadam informed that the child was referred for medical examination at Hospicio Hospital, Margao and while police were making arrangements to shift the child to Apna Ghar, the police is said to have received phone call from a relatives of child informing that they will take charge of the child.
Body fished out from well
MARGAO: One Nicolou Pango, 43, resident of Arlem, Raia died after he accidentally fell into the well on Sunday night.
Maina Curtorim police said that deceased body was recovered from the well near the house of deceased by fire brigade personnel on Monday.
The family members of the deceased are learnt to have gone to attend marriage function while Nicolou remained back at home. When the family members came back from function at midnight they were shocked to find deceased not at home and began to search for him. A case of unnatural dead has been registered by police who are investigating.
Bike stolen at Benaulim
MARGAO: Colva police on Monday have reported a case of theft of Bajaj Pulsor (GA-08-S-1337) which was parked outside the staff gate at Taj Exotica, Benaulim.
Ashely D’silva, resident of 1st Ward, Colva in a complaint filed stated that the bike was parked outside staff gate of the hotel at 1.30 pm on December 16 and that when he came back at 12 midnight he found it missing. After having failed to trace the bike, D’silva filed complaint with Colva police who are investigating.
Rash driving case registered
MARGAO: Margao police on Monday, registered an offence of rash and negligent driving against the rider of Scooty, (GA-08-L-1971), Atik Aslan Sheik, Davorlim.
Atik along with his 14 years brother Mahir were on way form Davorlim to KTC bus stand, Margao, dashed rear side of a mini bus thereby causing injuries to the pillion rider Mahir and to himself.
